Students from the Stephen Perse 6th Form College took to the stage to perform the play 'Teechers' by John Godber.
Our annual 6th Form production took place on Friday 8 February, at the Senior School Hall.
‘Teechers’, by John Godber, is set in a rough comprehensive school in a fairly deprived area where three Year 11 students are coming to the end of their decidedly unimpressive school career. As a farewell gesture, they decide to put on a play for their favourite Drama teacher, Mr Nixon. Whilst ‘Teechers’ is essentially a comedy it also delivers some very strong social messages - all children deserve to be properly educated, regardless of their financial circumstances and all children deserve to be given opportunities to find and fulfil their potential. The other key message that Godber’s play puts across very clearly is that the Arts in general, and Drama in particular, are excellent tools for learning and for helping children and young people build their communication skills and develop self-confidence and self-respect.
Our cast of 8 students each played a number of different roles to represent the various members of the teaching staff and student body of Whitewall School. The cast had a variety of challenging characters to consider, including Mr Basford the Deputy Head, a typical child hater, Oggy Moxon the school bully who everybody is terrified of, Maureen Whitham, a hopeless teacher, desperate to leave the school, and Jeff Nixon, the new Drama teacher who manages to successfully ignite passion into some of the students at the school. The production, directed by Miss Georgina Wood, featured an eclectic soundtrack of upbeat songs from the 80s through to the present day, with props and set created by students through our Backstage enrichment module.
For our Year 13 students, this was their last ever Drama and Theatre performance in school. Some of them have taken part in a large number of SPF productions over the years, both as performers and as members of the tech or backstage crew. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for all their hours of hard work and creative input and to wish them all the very best in their future studies.
