Cambridge Model United Nations (CamMUN) update by Year 13 student Remi S.
The Stephen Perse Foundation first organised and hosted CamMUN in 2018. Five years and a global pandemic later, we are proud to continue this in our fourth conference, which took place virtually and free of charge, on the evening of Friday 3 December and all day on Saturday 4 December 2021.
We were excited to welcome over 200 delegates from 30+ countries, alongside participants from our own Stephen Perse Sixth Form based in Cambridge. This year’s theme was ‘Tackling polarisation and estrangement in an already divided world.’ Our keynote speaker, Kevin Kester, put it best in our opening ceremony: it is easy to avoid what makes us uncomfortable, and so deepen the ideological rift between us. It’s difficult, but necessary, to confront that in a constructive, communicative manner, fostering understanding and ultimately friendship.
This is exactly what we did in our debate sessions, with delegates engaging in vibrant discussions on the subject of everything from the Spanish Civil War to the regulation of cryptocurrency. Between debates, we made time to provide chocolates, apples, pizza and coffee to our hardworking on-site chairs. Over the course of the two days, participants bonded as individuals as well as delegates, crossing cultural and geographical boundaries over Zoom.
CamMUN is an invaluable experience for anyone who is interested in debating, exploring global issues and/or international relations: ultimately, it cultivates an awareness of the challenges we face today, and empowers students 14-18 to work towards solutions.
