  • John Oliver

    Published 08/11/16
Jdownloadohn Oliver is a British comedian who is receiving a huge amount of recognition for his impact on the news, politics and current affairs through his show, 'Last Week Tonight with John Oliver'. He doesn't identify as a journalist, but is arguably more thorough and informative than several of today's mainstream journalists. He has covered things such as issues concerning net neutrality, the Miss America Organisation not spending as much on scholarships as it claims, or even Argentina's debt crisis. His effect on news has been dubbed "The John Oliver Effect", because of his ability to turn relatively boring topics, that people wouldn't normally want to read about or watch, into hilariously viral phenomena. "The John Oliver Effect" has worked in several instances.

  • Lolita - 'Dolores Haze - Seductress or Victim?'

    Published 14/10/16
Vladimir Nabokov's revolutionary novel, Lolita, follows the abduction and sexual abuse of 12 year old Dolores Haze, better known as Lolita, by her pedophilic stepfather - and crucially, narrator - Humbert Humbert. Yet, Dolores Haze has been filtered and reduced down to the derogatory and misleading definition of "Lolita" in the English dictionary as a "a precociously, seductive girl". This widely accepted unsympathetic reading of one of the most controversial protagonists in existence, dictated by the manipulative verbal tricks of Humbert's narration, has eclipsed what is for me, the essence of Dolores Haze; a tragic and exploited child, a captive, a rape victim.

  • The Week of Living Vogue-ically

    Published 14/10/16
As part of my theological study, I read A. J. Jacobs’ magisterial work ‘The Year of Living Biblically’, in which he takes every biblical commandment literally and abides by them. For one whole year. Inspirational stuff, we can all agree, notably his righteous stoning of an adulterer, and ability to find a seat in New York City that had not been patronised by a menstruating woman.

  • Snowdon for Amantani

    Published 23/06/16
Eleven lower sixth students climbed Snowdon this weekend to raise money for Amantani, a charity which helps children in Peru by providing them with boarding houses near to their schools. Before these boarding houses were set up, many of the children had to walk up to 8 hours every day just to get to and from school. Our walk up Snowdon was a representation of this walk undertaken by the children before Amantani began work in the area.
