  • Genetics Talk

    Published 04/05/16
maxresdefaultThanks to the organisation of the science society, Rhys Jones gave a fascinating talk to a few sixth form students on the ability of scientists to add a fluorescent protein to proteins of biological interest in order to follow its progress through organisms. This technique is used by scientists who don't have access to more expensive Scanning Electron Microscopes to see structures inside cells. It basically consists of cutting a section of a protein that creates the fluorescent glow of jellyfish and pasting it onto the end of the protein that the scientist wants to observe. This can then be easily seen by scientists as it goes through synthesis, transport through the cell, and different functions.

  • Engineering Education Scheme

    Published 03/05/16
Back in September of 2015, 8 budding engineers met in the design technology department of the senior school and were tasked with designing and producing something entirely new. With no brief other than the requirement to solve a problem, we set about trying to invent something entirely new, with the end goal of presenting it to a team of engineers from successful companies from all areas of the industry. With the help of two engineers from ARM, one team set about designing an automated pill dispenser to assist pharmacists, while the other team attempted to solve a very local problem – bike theft – by designing an electronic bike lock, which could be controlled from a mobile phone.IMG_5498 (1)

  • Amantani

    Published 03/05/16
Do you want to climb Snowdon? A sponsored walk up Snowdon will take place on the 17th-18th June to raise money for Amantani. Amantani is a charity based in Peru that aims to help children access education in rural areas. Children in the most isolated areas of Peru often have to walk up to 8 hours to get to and from school, leaving them exhausted, too tired to learn. Amantani has set set up boarding houses for the children, near their schools so that they can get the most out of their education. The time that they would spend walking to and from school is spent on  "academic support classes, extra-curricular activities, personal development workshops and community outreach projects".

  • This Week in Sport

    Published 03/05/16
As many will know, on Monday night history was made. After Tottenham’s draw with Manchester United, Leicester City FC have been announced Barclays Premier League Champions for the first time in the clubs history. Jamie Vardy, the clubs top scorer, currently holds the record for the most goals scored this season, 22. The recently announced footballer of the year, Riyad Mahrez, has produced 7 assists so far, the second most in the current season, falling just short of Özil’s 13. However, this can all change in their last game against the previous champions, Chelsea. They will attempt to defend this title next season against the first newly-promoted side, Burnley, who, after a 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers, have secured their place in the top flight next season.

  • This Week in the World

    Published 26/04/16
It has been 30 years since the Chernobyl nuclear power station disaster this week. Commemorations have taken place for the people who died as a result of the disaster; the 50 people who died immediately and those who have died as a result of diseases attributed to the radioactive explosion. There is ongoing scientific debate as to whether the babies born today, in nearby areas, with deformities and the numerous children who are developing thyroid tumours, can still be attributed to the Chernobyl disaster. It is estimated that 4000 people in total will die as a result of diseases attributed to the Chernobyl disaster. The event contributed to the downfall of the USSR and transformed the public perception and political approaches in regard to nuclear power.p03qtnmk

  • New! Psychopathology Society

    Published 24/04/16
Psychopathology Society will be running on Wednesdays during lunchtime, anyone and everyone is welcome but it's especially relevant to those going into any kind of caring profession (doctors, nurses, etc). We will start off by discussing mental disorders and what they actually are versus what people commonly see them as, and we will go into both the biological and the psychological theories behind them. We will also be running a blog where we can post about the things we've done, as well as continuing to contribute to the school blog! Writing pieces for both of these blogs can really help you delve into research further in topics that you want to learn more about; everyone chooses their own topic and when they want to write, no commitments or deadlines! The idea is for everyone to have a chance to learn about an aspect of mental health that interests them, and we want everyone to have the opportunity to participate fully, writing about what they enjoyed or putting forward ideas for the next weeks session, everyone's ideas are unique and deserve to be listened to! Everyone is welcome, we hope to see you there!
