Dear parents,
It has been great to see the children start the Stephen Perse Connected summer term with such enthusiasm. The ‘Amazing animals’ topic has certainly caught their attention and in our first week we have seen the children going on a hunt for all of their toy animals, making some colourful animal art and even joining their teachers and dressing up as animals.
As we continue to work in our “connected” school, the teachers have been impressed by the learning habits the children have regularly demonstrated. Firstly we have seen lots of resilience, as for some of our youngest children a Google Meet with their teacher has been quite a daunting prospect. They often seem to think that teachers sleep at school, so to have them appear digitally in their homes has been quite surprising! However, the children have managed to overcome their initial reservations and are beginning to share their news and stories enthusiastically with their teachers.
Next we have seen brilliant examples of critical thinking during our daily reveal activity, where the children look at images of an object that has been photographed close up and try to decide what the object might be. They give excellent reasons for their thinking. Our favourite example so far was a guess for a close up of a pencil, ‘it’s a chicken, because this bit is the feathers and this bit is the wings’.
Finally we have very creative families in our Reception and Kindergarten classes. Children and parents have been collaborating to think of ways they can make resources with the things available to them at home. Some have been counting the eggs the chickens have laid to help in a Maths lesson, while some have decorated their home to look like a school. The children have all adapted to the routines of this new school life so well and despite missing their friends and teachers they are approaching each task with their usual mixture of energy and fun. We are so proud of all our Kindergarten and Reception children.
I wish all of our families a restful weekend.
Kind regards
Mrs Sarah Holyoake
