Developing global issues the focus at STEM competition

A huge variety of projects were on show at the annual STEM competition between Dame Bradbury's and the Junior School, focusing on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The annual STEM competition, held between Dame Bradbury’s and the Junior School, came to an exciting conclusion on Friday 22 March. 12 teams from our schools came together to present on their STEM projects. The focus for this year’s competition were the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Our pupils selected a goal and then set about investigating ways in which they could have an impact upon developing global issues. Projects included using recycled materials to develop a cheap but effective water filtration unit, investigating growing food on a range of easily obtainable materials and what recyclables could be repurposed to offer effective insulation to poorly built houses. Our teams were judged on a set of criteria which included scrutinising their collaborative approach, a thorough investigative approach and their ability to present to their audience.

The contest was judged by Dr Emily Camm, and a team from the Junior School came away as this year’s victors, with a Dame B’s team and and a Junior School team receiving a highly commended award.

All the competitors presented passionately on their independent projects, which they had researched, run and evaluated with great detail and clearly gained some very useful skills along the way.
